Thoughts while reading….

I cannot image how invaded the Aborigines would have felt. Icannot image myself living in Australia during the late 1700s. I appreciate andadmire the people who came to Australia, who respected the land they had cometo and the people who lived here first.

The stigma of being a convict. It has taken generations forsome families to leave their convict history in the past. I love that Australiaisn’t divided by class. A ‘Gentleman’ can fall in love with anyone and marryher. A person, who has been in jail, can serve time, repent and make a new lifeand isn’t forever labelled a jailbird. (I hope)

When I think back to the way things were run, especiallywhen the Governor left the country and the law was left the hands of thedrunken New South Wales Corps, I’m thankful for the legal system we have inplace now.

This is a Young Adult book. I highly recommend it for anyone13 to 100. There are themes of abuse, mistresses, alcoholism and violence – souse parental discretion.

I thoroughly enjoyed Nanberry by Jackie French. It is a compelling story to read.

Written for a Scary Story comp

'Morning.' Two police officers’ shadows filtered throughTammy’s doorway. 'We have a warrant.'

'Why?'

'Tosearch your apartment.'

'But, I wasabout to go out.' She looked at Indy, strapped in the stroller.

‘We'll be donein a few minutes and you can be on your way.'

Herhand shook as she pulled the door open.

'Sorry if we’ve surprisedyou.' They entered her apartment, then opened and closed doors and drawers.

Shewaited rocking the stroller back and forth. The men soon returned with anenvelope.

'JeromeHale—friend of yours?'

'Jeromefrom next door?' She didn’t know his surname. One night. Stupid, stupid,stupid.

‘He'sdone a runner.'

'What’sthat?' Tammy eyed the envelope.

'Legaldocuments. He planted them in your wardrobe. Did he mention his daughter?'

'Onlybriefly. I haven’t met her, though.'

'He’skidnapped her. Would you know anything about that?'

Tammyshook her head.

‘He’sdangerous. Call us if he returns.'

Shepulled her daughter from the stroller. 'What was I thinking, Indy?'

Shedidn’t want to take any chances. They hibernated in a stifling, locked up apartment.

Thatnight, wind gusts clattered the windows. The sky turned into an electricallight show and the walls vibrated with each crack of thunder.

Lightningblacked out the power and the rolling rumbles woke Indy. Fearful of Jeromereturning, Tammy settled her daughter back to sleep.

Afterthe storm had passed, a raucous knock rattled the front door. Her handstrembled at Jerome’s outline in the opaque window. She crawled to Indy’sbedroom.

'Comeon Tammy. I’ve got bubbly.'

Shesalivated at the thought of a drink.

'Ijust want to see Indy before I head off.'

Tammyreached for the bedroom door and swung it closed. Indy stirred.

'Shhbaby. It's ok.' Tammy hummed.

Indy relaxed,drifting back to sleep.

'Tammy!I know you're home.'

Shebit down hard on the inside of her mouth, sprouting blood onto her tongue.

'I’llcome in the back.' Jerome’s voice now quiet, barely audible through the paper-thinwalls.

Shebreathed deeply. My phone. Shecrawled to the kitchen and reached up to the bench where she always left it.

Jeromebanged on the backdoor. Tammy rushed back to Indy's room and punched in '000'.At the same time, Jerome began tapping on the window. She snapped in a shortbreath.

Avoice boomed, 'Name and location please.'

Tammyfelt for Indy’s play mat on the floor and lifted it over her head. Shewhispered the details. 'Jerome… police …told me he's dangerous… outside now… thinkhe’s tapping a stone on the window.’

Aloud crash of glass made her jump.

'Pleasestay on the line,' the voice said.

Itwasn't Indy's window. Which window was it?She froze with fear. A siren blared then a small tribe of scuffling shoespassed Indy's window. Voices yelled. Tammy heard a muffled thwack. Morescuffling. More voices.

She sat stilluntil a knock on the door startled her.

'Tammy. Police.'

As a writer, an exceedingly goodbook to me, is when I don’t notice how it’s written, but find myself completelywrapped up in the story. Come Back to Me by Sara Foster was one of those books. I couldn’t putit down and lacked sleep for a few days.

Thoughts while reading…

Communication inrelationships means everything. Putting off a difficult conversation allows theproblem to fester and grow. Not saying what you really mean can lead to lifechanging consequences. In Ephesians 4:26 we read to never let the sun go downon an argument. Not to go to bed angry. In Come Back to Me, we see charactershurting. Many times this pain could have been avoided by making time to havethat difficult conversation.

Another thought was howimportant it is to love the moment because you really don’t know when a crazy catastrophemay change your life forever.

And the third thing that keptcoming to mind while reading was the importance of forgiveness. Forgivingyourself and others and letting the past stay in the past. Tomorrow is alwaysnew and fresh, even when living with the consequences of tragedy, a new beautifulcan be found.

This was the first of Sara Foster's books I've read. Can't wait to read more.

The Voice, New Testament

The Voice New Testament (Revised and Updated)by EcclesiaBible Society is relatively new. It is similar in some respect to The Messageversion as it reads like a story, yet from what I’ve read so far, The Voice haskept the power of other translations. The team of 27 bible scholars, 51 writersand 36 contributors have created a translation that is considered a “contextualequivalence” rather than a paraphrase.

I’m not sure if I agree on a couple of decisions the teammade when translating the original Bible texts into the Voice. One of thosebeing that when Jesus addressed people as ‘brothers’ the Voice team have decidedto write the scriptures as gender neutral or gender inclusive - ‘brothers andsisters.’(preface xv)

But in general, this version is incredibly enjoyable to readand understand. And it now stands proudly beside my New King James version.

A good way to round up my 2011 is with a little book round up...
After reading Rachael John's post about her best read of 2011, I was inspired to write a similar post, but I found it too hard to narrow it down to one. I also didn't want to leave it at my top two, so I've posted my top ten. But even then I found it hard because there's another ten at least that I could have added to this list.

Ok... perhaps not.

Recently at the Word Writers Fair in Brisbane, we passed around 2 books, one traditionally printed and the other digitally printed. The digital version had no smell. I discovered how much I really love that inky smell. The inky smell to me says ... BOOKS... ahhh. It makes me all warm and fuzzy. So how cool are the cans in the pic above? Now we can print books (or not print them and read eBooks) and still have the lovely book smell. This way we can move with technology but enjoy the simple pleasures of the past.

I'm winding down social media again. I have a goal to revise my YA WIP (for those who aren't writers ... Young Adult novel, Work in Progress) by the end of January. I'll be around, but I won't be allowing myself to spend endless hours reading all of the amazing blogs online. You may only see the odd book review posted here over the next month or so... or other stuff if I feel the urge.

We love celebrating the birth of Jesus at this time of year in our house.

How simple and easy are these for the kids to do for themselves?

Go to your $2 shop and see what they’ve got...

I found these plates and thought we could cut the trees in the centre cut out and hang them as decorations.

I also found this thick tinsel.

How to make them...

Cut out the centre of the plate and wind the tinsel around.

Yes so easy the kids can do it themselves… hehehe just the way I like it.

You could mix it up and use two colours on the same plate.

Punch a hole and attach a ribbon to hang.

Simple.

An Inspirational Romance Review...

After living a life ofwealth and privilege, young Bay Anders finds herself lost. Her step father setsher up with an allowance to allow her to flee from America and pursue her photography hobby in Australia whilegrieving the loss of her mother. She begins her search for her father but whenher allowance is cut off, she soon runs out of funds and feels she has no otheroption but to return to LA.

A miracle meeting leads herto meet Flynn McKenna who is hiding from the world on her father's island. Buther father's mysterious disappearance is of grave concern.

Developers lurk, pressingfor the sale of the island. Bay must fight an uphill battle to keep the newplace she wants to plant her roots and call home.

I loved this book!

Some thoughts whilereading...

Where is home and what doeshome feel like? My home is South East Queensland, I've never ventured more thanan hour from where I was born. I don't need to because I love it here, wheretemperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees and there's always an air-conditionedroom, pool or ocean nearby in summer. I live in paradise. But home is more thanyour surroundings. What else makes where you live home to you?

Does money change a person? This scenario came to mind while reading.

Invitation A - a night withmovie stars. ' You are invited to LA. You flights have been paid for in firstclass and all your transfers from the moment you leave your house will be in alimousine. Your accommodation is in a5star resort and all meals will be paid for.

Invitation B - a cousinswedding. 'You are invited to Mackay andmay have to get several connecting flights, call your travel agent. You'll bepicked up by a friend of a friend in a little rusty Datsun. There is a fold outbed, it will be in the lounge room with the family who are happy for you tostay with them. You'll meet them after you get there. If you could pitch in forfood during your stay that would be great.'

Roseyou have written some charming characters in Back to Resolution, who is yourfavourite and who was the most fun to create?

That’sa really hard question to answer, it’s kind of like asking a Mother which childshe loves the best. I have to be boring and say I love them all, but as to whowas the most fun? It has to be Amos and Neville. They are seriously funcharacters, and mainstays throughout the entire three book ‘Resolution’ series.I often giggle when writing dialogue for them. They never fail to amuse andsurprise me at their antics.

Haveyou always written? Were you inspired by a book or an author to jump in andhave a go?

I onlystarted writing a few years ago. ‘Back to Resolution’ is the product of my veryfirst attempt. I think it was the right time in my life. A lot of things cametogether, personally, spiritually, and mentally. If I had started prior to thisI think it would have taken me longer to get there. It was when I realised thatthere were Australian Christian Romance Authors that I thought – ‘I should havea go at this and see what happens’. It is also true that the Lord placed thison my heart to do. Without His direction I never would have gone there.

Who isyour favourite author and why?

Thisis in no way meant to sound egotistical, but I am my favourite author. I writewhat I love to read, and as yet I haven’t tired of re-reading my work. I stilllaugh at all the funny bits, and cry at the sad scenes. I still also love thetummy dropping romantic moments too. The thought that others will enjoy this asmuch as I have is just the icing on the cake for me.

Butthere is one author and one book that I also never tire of – Jane Eyre byCharlotte Bronte. It’s my all time favourite. I read it ever few years, and yes– I have all the TV and movie versions. (none are as good as the book – ofcause).

The Donkey's First Christmas

The Donkey’s First Christmas is and enjoyable picture book. It tellsthe Christmas story from a humorous angle – the donkey’s point of view. Thedonkey is a little reluctant, possibly even a little too lazy to help out avery persistent man who travelled with a lady who had a big bump.
The story is told in a way that is obvious to only seasoned Christmas attendees,that the people who need the donkey are in fact, Joseph and Mary. Because thisis about the donkey, and the obvious isn’t stated, it leaves plenty of room forquestions and conversation with little ones.

I received a draft version in ebook format from the BookCrashto review. My older children read the story and found the font a little hard toread and my four year old lost interest with the amount of white picture-lesspages.(Unfortunately some of the pictures didn't load onto my iPad) I have to admit, the font wasn’t attractive for me or my husband to readeither. Yes, all six of us read it.

Even with our slight criticism, Mr 11, Miss 9 and Miss 8 allenjoyed the story. I would recommend taking a look at the print version as manypicture books lose their lustre in ebook form.

Ok.. so I’ve had a run of book reviews here on my blog and Ithought it was about time to write a personal post.

I didn’t quit writing, as I suggest I might in The Day IQuit Writing.

I did make it to the end of November with 50000 words and 30Picture Book ideas.

I also went away for 2 weeks in November, but before we wentaway, I had the opportunity to spend a day with an author and work on the first50 pages of my YA contemporary novel. There were four of us busily working onour laptops while the lovely Mary Hawkins moved between us, reading, helpingand guiding. The day was filled with wonderful conversation and loads oflaughs.

I was advised by a couple of published authors to focus onone genre until I get published, and develop a readership. At the moment Iwrite picture books, chapter books and YA. So they gave me something to thinkabout with that.

We also spoke quite a bit about formatting and editing.Smaller publishers who take on unsolicited manuscripts don’t have the time orresources to edit like the larger companies, so to have a chance a publication,the correct formatting and a professional edit is very important.

A great tip Mary had was to enlarge the font to super largeto pick up any spacing errors.

I also spent an afternoon in Paula Vince’s Page Turning FictionMasterclass. Most of what she shared I had heard or read before, but to hangout with ten other writers was just fantastic. Paula had us honing in on ourskill with writing exercises which mostly ended in laughter.

These two days were part of the Word Writers Fair in Brisbane. A great conference both for those with a Christian background or without.

Meg Wingrove worked happily in her roll as governess to thefour Sainsbury children. She held herself in complete control when thedashingly handsome brother to Mrs Sainsbury, Jack Fordham came to visit. Jackis used to women falling at his feet and is somewhat taken aback when Meg isn'tswayed by his flattery or charms. When the two seem in agreement to drop theflirtatious banter, they become close friends. Neither are willing to admitthey have fallen in love. To Jack, winning Meg's affection is a game he wantsto win. To Meg, her faith is more important and she vows to never enter arelationship with a man who does not share her faith.

The Game is a delicious read set in the Sydney surrounds of 1844. If I hadn't metAmanda Deed in person, I would be left thinking she is from another era. TheGame is mesmerising and nostalgic. After reading about battling pioneeringconvicts in Mary's Guardian and Charlotte'sAngel, to read about the affluent Jack Forham, heir to a noble English title,is another wonderful piece of Australian history brought to us through fiction.

The Game won the Omega Writers' Caleb Prize in 2010. Aworthy winner and a worthy read.

Charlotte’s Angel by Carol Preston

I read Charlotte's Angel just before holidays ... while I was dreaming of my holiday view that would look like this ...

Ocean is just to the left... mountains are just to the right... ahh - it was bliss

Youmay have recently read my review of Mary’s Guardian by Carol Preston,Charlotte’sAngel is next in the series.

Charlotte Plum is born to an ex-convict who is anything butmaternal. Her mother drags her from home to home to run from those chasingafter stolen goods. For many hours each day, young Charlotte is left unattended and is expectedto clean and cook, while her mother sleeps off a hangover or just catches up onsleep from an overactive night.

Thomas Douglass catches Charlotte in his sister’s garden but insteadof chastising her, he invites her in. Charlottewelcomes the friendship his family shows her. Their friendship is all too soon severedwhen Charlotte’s mother decides it’s time tomove on again and drags Charlotteaway with her.

I imagine with the ex-convict banner hung over your head,there would have been a lot of people who struggled with their worthiness. Thisnovel takes a slightly different look at the convict generation where Carol Preston hasagain researched the era and weaved a fictional story into our amazingAustralian history.

Mary's Guardian and Charlotte's Angel are both great stories and ever so interesting.

Historical Fiction with Christian elements.

OK so this was my holiday reading pile at our holiday unit. I made a fair dent in it and that's why you'll see more than the usual amount of reviews popping up on my blog. Watch out for the top book on the pile, next time you see it on my blog, there will be a give-a-way attached.

~The Review ~

Seventeen year old Lacey,completely ran off the rails after the death of her mother. To get her lifeback into order and complete high school, she moves to a small town to livewith her aunt. She hopes to leave her past behind and start afresh.

Laceyis lured to join a gang whose dress code is black clothes, black eye liner,black hair etc. She finds herself attracted to two very good looking boys inthe town - Zac, the leader of the gang and Camthe guy who seems to be stalking her and tends to turn up when Lacey findsherself in trouble.

Ina mix of demons and angels together with God and Satan, the characters turn totarot card reading and wicker to find solutions. Being a Paranormal Romance,this isn't the regular genre I choose to read, but it is a compelling story andliterally couldn't put it down.

L.A. Dale posted an invitation to read her book on Goodreads, I decided to check itout and purchased Angel's Bendthrough Amazon. This is the first full novel I've read in ebook format and as Isat down to write the review, I realise how much I like to hold the book in myhand and flick through for a quick revision before writing. Perhaps next time Iplan to review an ebook novel, I might take some notes as I go.

Nothingbeats the feel of paper in your hand but I'm so ok with technology and lookforward to buying loads more ebooks in the future.

Heidi's October by Penelope McCowen

Heidi likes to start each monthwith a list of new resolutions. To her, the annual resolutions made on New Year’sEve, fall by the wayside too quickly. As Heidi writes her list for October, shehad no idea of the bombshell her best friend is about to drop on her or thatshe will follow with an irreversible, inebriated blunder. After that one slipup, the future plays out the devastation of life changing consequences.

Heidiruns from the pain and finds herself in deep conversations with an elderlyfamily friend who introduces her to the ways of God. Heidi opens her mind tothe possibility that she could be forgiven and get through the tragedy. Butfacing the ones she hurt seems all too hard.

Heidi'sbest friend Annaliese is left burdened and isolates herself. Their relationshipseems doomed because of an intoxicated mistake.

Penelope McCowen's style of writing is easy to read and this story compels you to turn the page. Iwas in tears and laughter from very early in the novel and the high level of attachmentto the characters didn't dissipate at any stage.

Heidi'sOctober is a charming Christian Fiction novel with romantic elements.

And since spending a day with the lovely Mary Hawkins, I want nothing more than to continue on with what I worked on last Friday.
But I will continue.
And hopefully I'll find a couple of good writing sessions
And then the third in the trilogy with be penned ...
Or typed...
Well, the bare bones of the novel will be out of my mind and safely saved and backed up for future developments next year.
But I can't help but look forward to December where I can freely clean up my WIPs.
I am with my family and enjoying this time creating memories.

Intrinsically Unique

Have you ever thought about how intrinsically unique we aremade? But what happens when you don’t fit the box? What if, from the outsideyour complex character looks simple?

Over the past year or so I’ve been called an ‘A’ typepersonality, a melancholy and several other boxed up personality traits that Idon’t consider fit me well.

The most recent went something like this, ‘Because you enjoywriting, and you enjoy being home with your children (home schooling), you are anintroverted type person.’

You see, I grew up in a house of introverts who were mostlymelancholic. Being the youngest, I guess it was inevitable to outwardly pick upmany of those traits.

When I look at the meaning of introvert and extrovert, I don’tfit either. I’m happy to be off in my mind creating stories, yet I get chargedwith energy while with people.

My sister and I discovered a term years ago that I think isa better fit – an Introverted Extrovert. Impossible? No. Unique? Yes.

Seeing myself through the eyes of others and knowing who I wascreated to be, has given me greater perspective as I embark on writing about twogirls who seem outwardly quite simple yet inwardly they are uniquely complex. Myhope is to let their uniqueness shine but in a simple way as to not confuse thereader.

I believe that we all need to work out what faith we trulybelieve in. It’s easy to continue on with what our parents have taught us orsway to what our friends think, but until we really delve into our spiritualbeliefs and question what is right, there is a huge possibility we’veaccidentally checked our brains at the door.

This book is aimed at youth and is broken into six sections:Myths about God, Myths about Jesus, Myths about the Bible, Myths about theResurrection, Myths about Religion and Christianity, and Myths about Life andHappiness.

Each section discusses and challenges general comments thatare heard from friends, society and media. The authors include concise detailsand add humour to make it an enjoyable read. At the end of each chapter there is a healthy‘Brain Food’ section, which encourages the reader to research for themselves.

This review is for the updated and revised edition of Don’t CheckYour Brains at the Door, published in 2011. The original was published backin1992.

The only downside of this book is that it is written purely from the Christian perspective. Seeing things through others eyes can be just as informative.

This book is a very enjoyable read filled with inspiration andfor me confirmation. I would recommend it to any youth as well as anyone whoisn’t sure what they believe in.

My NaNoWriMo 2011 Tips

Two years ago, in October, I was midway through a twelveweek challenge to lose weight. My Twitter feed became flooded (well almost) with#NaNoWriMo tweets. I asked ‘What is NaNoWriMo’? I checked out the site www.nanowrimo.org I got excited.

So Iditched my weight loss challenge (I was in the running to win $1000) and signedup to write a novel in a November. I didn’t have time to turn up to all of theweigh-ins and write 50000 words.

That was 2009 … I won NaNoWriMo. The winner of theweight loss challenge lost approximately the same amount of weight I’d lost inthe first 6 weeks, but writing a novel was my dream. I knew I’d made the rightdecision.

Previously, I had started several novels but seemed to always get stuckgoing back to edit and rewrite parts.

Last year, I bounced back to the challenge and signed upagain for NaNoWriMo 2010. And then we were invited to a wedding in New Zealand. I knew I had to getmost of my 50000 words written before we left Australia.

I did it. I won Nano again in 2010. I love the adrenalin rush offorcing myself to write without looking back.

So with two wins under my belt I bring you some NaNo tips…

Never look back.

From the 1^st November to the 30^th Novemberthe page that stares back at you beckons you forward. Keep a note pad besideyou to make notes of where and what you need to adjust or make amendments to.Write in bold highlighted letters in the middle of your manuscript if you know youneed to fix something in the earlier pages, but November is not the month to revisitwhat you’ve already written.

Word Wars

Word wars or writing races help me write super fast. Thereare days in November where I simply don’t have the time to dwell over mystoryline or find the right words. Write or die is a race against time whereyou can get as many words as you can down in 5, 10 or 15 mins (you choose) There are also loadsof people willing to race you, check out the NaNo forums or your localwrite-ins.

PiBoIdMo tips...

1. Get out!
I find so much inspiration while out and about. Ideas come from my kids and other kids. Public areas and noises that I hear.

2. Not every day.
Some days you may find you are filled with ideas I think the most I came up with on one day last year was 6. If ideas are flowing one day it allows you to take days off when other commitments require your time.

3. Jot it down.
Pop your ideas straight into your iPhone, iPad, other electronic device or go retro and write them into a notebook while you're out of the house. Some ideas are lost forever if not written down straight away.

4. Enjoy life.
Laugh a lot, sing more than you have in a while, play the craziest game you own. Release those happy endorphins to help you be more creative.

From floods to droughts to fires, this country I love to callhome was settled by some mighty pioneers.
Mary's Guardian has a touching ending and is well worth the read.

The Day I Quit Writing

Rejection after rejection, heavy, honest critiques, harshblunt critique, negative feedback.

I don’t have thick skin. I’m wounded.

I quit.

Can I even write?

Perhaps my high school English teachers were right.

Fail.

So now that I’ve quit writing… who am I?

My life is full without writing. I might actually be able tofunction better if I never wrote another word.

But here I am – writing down my thoughts, pretending not to be a writer… because I quit writing today.

I’m a mum. A wife. A home educator. A friend. A playgroup co-ordinator. A churchvolunteer. A business owner. A charity auction co-ordinator. A reader. A Compassion advocate. A student ... and thelist goes on.

My life is full, I don’t need to write. I don’t need anymore rejection. I …

About now I can hear all of the successful authors screamingat me … don’t post such negative thoughts.

But I know I’m not alone.

It’s tough.

I can go from cloud nine to rock bottom and back to cloudnine in a day.

I didn’t get back to cloud nine today.

And please know I’m not after your pity or sympathy.

Just remember when you read a book – especially the firstbook published by an author – there has often been a whole lot of unseenemotion, even a lot of rejection and questioning. And also, a ridiculous amountof time has gone into that which you hold in your hands, which translates into acouple of minutes or hours of reading pleasure.

Yes, I quit today.

[And I’m very aware that the day I quit I’m still herepumping out more words on my computer.]

And I’m thankful that tomorrow is a new day.

I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo again this year – with the goalto write 50000 words in a month

If I don’t quit in November, that will give me three novelsto work on or shelve.

I’m also planning on joining in with PiBoIdMo – a picture bookidea each day for a month – I have ideas all the time – this discipline helpsme to write them down. I’m enrolled inan intensive writing workshop day in November during a writer’s fair.

So for me to continue and join in with The Word WritersFair, NaNoWriMo and PiBoIdMo … I just have to remember not to quit tomorrow or hopethat a very good friend comes along and tells me to stop beating a dead horse.

Grandparents and Family

Earlier this year I noticed how my parents and other family membersmake an effort to get to ‘school’ events. I looked back to when our childrenwere enrolled in a traditional school and how their grandparents would all makethe effort to be present Grandparents Day. Then I noticed that since we’d beenhome schooling, our kids' grandparents had stopped taking an interest in ourchildren’s schooling.

So I announced that we’d have a Grandparents and Familyweek. My parents, hubby’s parents, our elderly neighbour (almost family) andone of hubby’s brothers all made the effort to visit, share some food and enjoyseeing what the kids have been doing this year.

The kids read stories, poetry, danced and played music. They cooked morning or afternoon tea and they showed off their artwork, and where they work each day. They gave a gift to each visitor (drawings and artwork) and then offered their artwork to be purchased (at very reasonable prices)

It really was a wonderful week.
And I'm sure our guests enjoyed it too.

Road Trip

Last week we took a road trip

To visit some friends afar

We stopped and ate

And stopped to play

And enjoy ourselves

All the way

We could only find one place

That could contain a family of six

A two bedroom deluxe villa

With room only to swing a cat

(there was no cat swinging involved)

We invited our friends around

A bestie, her hubby and their seven kids

And hosted them for dinner

In our deluxe little shed

It was such a blessing for them and us

With seven kids invitations aren’t flowing

And they all played so happily together

We had plenty of time to chat

The next day we left our

Paper walled temporary house

And hung out all day with our friends

Red dirt ground through everything

Including hair and faces

Proved that everyone had fun

When we left late in the afternoon

My heart was full

My friendship tank overflowing

And my creative side had been filled with visuals

Dotted all over the countryside

Were rusty sheds

And falling down shacks

The kind that inspires me no end

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Friday Flash. Duringthe week I was inspired to write this micro. Hope you enjoy…

The beat filled the air as the drummers pounded theirinstruments to notify everyone. The end was near. People in the street walkedin time to the contagious rhythm. It brought a smile the crankiest of men andsilenced the cries of babies. The breeze settled, but only after the thump hadceased. The sun was no longer held in the sky by the Force. For the first timein a decade, there would be darkness. A nightfall. They would sleep withoutlight.

So I’ve been revising

So I’ve been revising.

Off in my own little world.

Preferring to stay at home at night rather than catching up with family or friends.

Some would say ‘crazy’

Others I’m sure … understand.

While rejections from all directions keep flooding in... I continue to work on new and exciting ideas. And then at night I enjoy revising. Finding delicious descriptions, filling in the details of characters and making my WIP sing and believing that with some more work it will be all glossy and ready to submit. But before I submit…

There is the tentative stage, where I start sending my WIP out to critique partners and beta readers. I hit send, pull a finger to my mouth, and then try to forget about it and move onto the next chapter or something else.

And speaking of the something else... I have one wonderful Chapter Book critique partner, but I’m looking for a couple of beta readers or crit partners for these younger WIPs as well. Please let me know if you’d be interested.

As the title suggests this novel is set in outback Australia, where the land is rugged and the properties are huge.

Twins, John and Jillian have taken over the farm management. Jillian’s secret love interest, Steve, turns up when she least expects him. Jillian pushes away her feelings for Steve because she has reason to be concerned with the whereabouts of her brother. Jillian and Steve are forced to spend time together while they camp out on the property. After finding John, both Jillian and Steve are challenged by their dreams for the perfect partner while danger surrounds them.

Outback from Baragula is the second book in the Baragula Trilogy. I read Return to Baragula earlier this year and jumped at the chance to enter a competition on Mary’s blog to win Outback from Baragula. And yippee... I won a copy!! This novel is filled with adventure, suspense and romance. Now I need to get my hands on the third in the series, Justice at Baragula.

Outback from Baragula takes the reader on a journey of self discovery of faith, pride and forgiveness. While reading, I was reminded how young love can easily sway judgement. I myself fell for someone whose beliefs were vastly different to mine. I am thankful that relationship ended so I was free to find my husband. Meditating in the Valley

Inour fast food society, the pain and endurance of the wait can be excruciating. I am in a valley, you may have read my blog post last week. During times of darkness in the journey, I cry out to God.

Hear my prayer, O LORD,
         And let my cry come to You.
Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my trouble;
         Incline Your ear to me;
         In the day that I call, answer me speedily. Psalms 102:1-2

I write because I love to write. When I’m writing I feelalive. I’m still writing and enjoying it, yet lately I’ve feel completely wrungout.

Though the fig tree does not bud
   and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
   and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
   and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
   I will be joyful in God my Saviour.
The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
   he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
   he enables me to tread on the heights. Habakkuk 3:17-19

I have cried out and heard nothing, until lastfew days. I have sensed that this is a time of patience, a time of endurance.

I have been reminded why I write.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility

The Valley

I’m in a valley.

Facing the question…

‘What if I never get published?’

Sure I have short stories and articles published.

But … What if my books are never accepted by a publisher?

Would I continue to write?

The answer is yes.

I am a writer

My soul is alive when I’m writing

But I’m in a valley

It’s very dark

And I don’t want to burden you with details

Except to say

The best thing about valleys…

Is eventually you find your way to the mountain peak

So until I’m climbing that mountain

I’m stepping out of social media

Hope you are all still here when I return.

Not So Sunny Saturday

When I woke up this morning to this

I grabbed my cuppa and went back to bed!

And read a little fiction

Then a couple of kids books

Then I downloaded a couple of kids books onto my iPad for my girls who wanted to join me in bed

Then I indulged in a little study with 'Self Editing for Fiction Writers'

There is nothing I love better on a wet day

Than to stay home and write!!

I'm thankful that there is no sport

No commitments

No pressing housework (except a load of washing)

And my kids are tired

So they are watching movies

While I'm working on my WIP

Overflowing ~ Write On Con ~ Unplugged

Oh My Goodness!!!

I am full!

Write on Con (the free online conference for writers) this year was jam packed, loaded up and overflowing with information and inspiration.

With so much to absorb into my brain, I hoped sleep would allow me to continue… I woke up this morning ready to catch-up and join in on the final day … and found myself overloaded… brain fried. The good thing is, all the forums and links are still up and I can catch up on the last day in a week or so.

What I learnt from Write on Con this year… never give up – I am a writer – I love being a writer – I will write whether I am published or not. I found some areas that I need to fine tune. I learnt more about the agent/editing/publishing process. And I felt like I met a bunch of amazing people.

I got Ninja’d … an undercover agent commented on my query letter and tore it apart (ouch) .. so I rewrote it and a peer tore it apart (ouch) so I rewrote it and another peer gave me the thumbs up (phew). I know I need to stretch so I can learn and improve on my craft – all the feedback I received was fantastic.

And for the overload factor…

I need to unplug, and get off line for a couple of days.

My WIP is calling me and with such an overloaded mind – I need to take this stored energy and inflect it into my writing .. not tweeting or facebooking or commenting on blogs… all of which I love and will return to soon.

I decided to interview her, as my mind is open to all publishing options.

Did you ever think about going down the traditional publishing path?

Absolutely, it’s what I always aimed for and I would still consider the right traditional publishing deal but for me, it’s about self-determination and the ability to do it yourself these days. I approached traditional publishers back in 2008 with my first book, a non fiction career change book. I had no platform, nothing differentiating me and not surprisingly, I was rejected. But I didn’t see this as the end, it was the beginning of my journey into adventures in publishing and marketing. I learned all about the industry and about internet marketing. I started a blog, a podcast and videos as well as social networking. I wrote more and learned about ebooks and then set up my own company and did it myself! Ironically, now I have a platform and an audience and have done it myself, I would be more attractive to a publisher but as yet, I haven’t tried again. The success of Amanda Hocking is an inspiration to me, as she got a print deal after successfully selling on the Kindle. John Locke is also an inspiration and he doesn’t need a print deal as he is selling millions on the Kindle. So yes, I do think about a traditional deal, but I’m happy going the indie route for now.

You have created a significant online platform. How do you set boundaries to spend enough time online – but not waste time?

I don’t waste time online, everything I do is focused on either

a) creating content - blog posts, podcast, videos, tweets - all these things are breadcrumbs leading back to my site and my books

b) networking with authors and readers - both of which are critical. Personal recommendations are imperative now, it’s still word of mouth, we just have more leverage.

You have to be committed to building a platform in order to build one and you have to be consistent. I haven’t had much time off the internet for 2.5 years but it is so rewarding and worth it, and it’s my hobby and enjoyment as well as something necessary for authors, so it isn’t painful.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt through self publishing?

You can be a successful author if you write something people want to read and you can get it in front of people who want to read it. Kindle and other ebook markets offer the way to self-publish now, but there are still millions of books out there. You still need the marketing aspect. Basically, all this is still important for traditionally published authors as well. The only thing missing is that someone else does the work of publishing.

I would add that indie authors MUST pay for pro editors. I had 2 editors and a lot of proof readers for Pentecost. Independent books must be as good quality reading as trade published and editors are the way forward for this.

What’s the most important thing to think about when marketing a self published book?

You still have to connect with readers as authors have always done. So if your book is not in bookstores waiting for people to walk past, you need to get it in front of them another way. That’s where online marketing comes in and you need to find your niche online. Start with something and then move into other spheres, don’t get overwhelmed. I started with my blog, then moved into podcasting, then twitter, then videos.

Marketing is not a bad thing, you’re not scamming anyone. Most of us are just writers with good books who want to get them into the hands of people who might enjoy them. That should be your focus.

~ a book review ~

As a father with four daughters, Greg Wright has found what works for their family. Daddy Dates. He began dating his girls from a young age and has now put his experience into this entertaining and informative book. Wright takes us on a journey of age groups, personality types and the affects of peers.

Greg wants what we all want for our daughters, the hope that they will grow up to be strong and confident. The hope that we will have strong relationships with our children throughout their lives. And the hope to save them from too much heartache as they journey through adolescence.

Also included in Daddy Dates, is a chapter on Mommy Dates. As I am the Mom... or even the Mum, (lol.. seriously… why do we spell it differently?) I chose not to read this chapter. The Daddy of our household is looking forward to getting his hands on this book now that I've written the review.. and I’m sure he’ll pick up some tips… and our relationship will benefit too. (happy wife… happy life)

Although this is a parenting book and somewhat a how to book, Daddy Dates reads more like a narrative. This is very well written and edited. It is clear to understand and worth the read. I would love to see a follow up... 'The affects of Daddy Dates in the Adult years' ???

I highly recommend this book to anyone with daughters.

An Aussie Book Review

This is the forth book I’ve read by Paula Vince. Her style of story telling is relaxed and enjoyable.

The blurb…
Courtney survives an accident but he suffers from complete amnesia. When he is released from hospital, he meets his mother, sister and girl friend. His girl friend mysteriously insists they get to know each other again. Courtney then goes on to reconcile relationships that seemed doomed before his accident. His memory comes back in a flurry and he subsequently has the choice of who he will be, the Courtney before the accident or the person he’d become during the week of his amnesia. The outworking of his self discovering brings a compelling read.

Thoughts….
Best Forgotten has mystery, action, faith and suspense with a touch of romance. This book sends the reader into their own mind, to question family relationships and if there is need for restoration. The younger reader would acquire insight into consequential actions. There is also the journey of faith and fate weaved throughout this novel.

Charming and delightful! I would highly recommend this one.

Date Rape ~ The Mockingbirds

The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney

Not a review…

This YA novel is an issue book. Date rape. Whitney writes in this book, the view that the lack of a ‘yes’ means ‘no’. No means no. Silence means no. And if someone is sleeping – that means no. The only yes which would lead to consensual sexual contact (not only intercourse) is a verbal ‘yes’. ‘The lack of a yes is a no.’ I totally agree with this point of view.

This novel has very conflicting reviews, after reading it, I can understand why. But the reason I’m writing about the novel and not reviewing it, is of a parenting nature. Sex changes who you are. Sexual purity is worth working towards in a world that tells us otherwise.

If you have been a victim of date rape, I’m so very sorry that you had to go through the pain of such an act.

The issue of date rape reminded me that as a parent I am responsible (alongside my husband) to educate my boy that the only yes is a verbal yes when the girl is of sound mind. I hope to teach my son how to respect girls and regard them as people, not sexual objects. I will help him guard his eyes and mind from computer games, magazines and TV etc, that portray the complete opposite.

I will prepare my girls by discussing the effects of alcohol on young small bodies and the possibility of black outs. (I can speak from experience) The danger they could put themselves in, if they are not of sound and sober mind. I will talk to them about the safety of group dates, double dates and chaperoned dates. I will teach them that not everyone has the same values that we have and that not all boys can be trusted.

We will discuss with our children why abstaining from sexual contact until marriage is a viable option.

I love teenagers. I love their energy. I wish I loved being a teenager but I missed out on loving being a teenager. (that’s a whole other story). I want my children to enjoy their adolescence. I hope they will, within safe boundaries.

We are still in the preteen years… Do you have any advise on how to protect your children?

This novel falls into the Inspirational/Christian Romance genre. Romance wouldn’t be romance without silky hair, beating hearts and racing pulses.

Real Estate Integrity

Ok… I’ve heard the murmurings, the snickers behind hands. Many people have strong views when it comes to Real Estate salesmen and their level of integrity. ‘You can never trust a Real Estate agent’ was a common statement when my hubby was starting out. Back then, I thought the same.

This post is a continuation of Buying or Selling… Remember to ask and From the Wife’s Perspective pt1

Con Man v’s Integrity

Yes there are many shonky real estate agents out there who work in the grey, who will lie just to get a sale and who will put the pressure on you to sign contracts. If you aren’t completely sure about something, check with your solicitor, and never feel pressured to sign a legal document.

How do you pick an honest agent? Use your gut. Women are often better at recognising the con man. Also go by word of mouth. Speak to friends and neighbours about who they’ve dealt with. But don’t always listen to other Real Estate agents, some of them are too willing to put others down to boost themselves.

My husband saw early in his Real Estate career, many colleagues who are less than honest. Working only in sales, he decided to always do things by the book, sometimes it’s hard to, but in the end it’s worth it.

Who does the agent service?

Real Estate agents work for the vendor. They are not buyers’ advocates and if they are busy, they probably don’t have time to call you back every time they list a property you might be interested in. If you are a buyer and would like that kind of service, ask the agent if they have a mailing list (email, or paper) that they could add you to.

There is a well used term, ‘you snooze, you lose.’ If you really want a property, don’t expect an agent to chase you. If you want it, act fast.

I hope my thoughts ‘from the wife’s perspective’ have changed a few mind sets.

Meghan is the middle child with four siblings. Her family faces shocking circumstances, where they have to move and travel to find work on the road. Judging Meghan gives a very descriptive look at life in Australia through the depression years of 1931-1932. Meghan sees the world as black and white, right or wrong. She faces loss of friendship, a moment where death stares her in the face and an altercation with the law. The discovery of forgiveness and her true value allows her to stand up for justice.

This novel allows the reader to look at friendships, the ones that work and the ones that hurt. Also, something many of us struggle with for many different reasons, forgiveness. What is it and who is forgiveness really for? Another attribute is the insight into family, what holds your family together and what makes families fall apart?

This book stands alongside Anne of Green Gables, Pollyanna and What Katie Did. Judging Meghan is classic and wholesome in nature but written for today’s reader. This is absolute joy to read with every page urging you to read on.

Judging Meghan has become one of my all time favourite reads.

I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for more of Trudy’s books on the shelf.

The Blackberry Bush by David Housholder

I won this book through first reads over at Goodreads.

This story follows the story of a boy and a girl born on the same day. They are connected by generational history and both move continents and struggle with much through their journey.

Both Josh and Kati have fascinating stories. As the characters unfold across the pages, we come to a fast pace climax where their paths cross and their destinies are changed forever.

Because this story has a long back story, spanning generations, I found the beginning a little confusing. But as the story continued, all I wanted was more. I wanted to know more of their family history. I wanted to know more but in the end I was satisfied with an enjoyable read.

This is a moving story that will have you laughing and crying. I’ll leave you with a beautiful quote from the novel…

I recently posted an interview with my hubby on buying and selling houses .. you can see that HERE
I had more to add after our interview finished... so here's my perspective.

My husband worked in a franchise real estate agency for over 4 years until a year ago, when we started our own independent real estate company, Finesse Property. We wanted to have the opportunity to sell properties proficiently, with a high level of excellence and in doing so, minimise the stress vendors experience when selling.

Agent v’s Agency

Since leaving the franchise agency, one of the main concerns Shane hears is, “but you aren’t a national brand with a big sales team”. Ultimately, you are working with an ‘agent’ not agency. The agent you sign up to sell your house is the main driving force behind it getting sold. Don’t be deceived by thinking that because you list with an ‘agency’, the entire sales team will be doing their best to sell your property – it is simply not the case. The ‘listing agent’ (not usually the ‘listing agency’) will be marketing and actively working on your property until it sells. The non-listing agents working in the same office will occasionally speak to a buyer who they think might be interested in your property, however most of the time the buyer would have already seen it with the listing agent, or viewed it online.

The majority of people know what they are looking for and search for properties online. If the house meets all their needs they’ll take the next step and call the listing agent or enquire online. Again, these enquiries go directly to the listing agent - not the listing agency.

I hope this has answered some questions you may have had - we are based in Australia - so systems in other countries may be different.

Buying or Selling? ... remember to ask...

Buying or selling your home can be one of the most stressful times in your life. After all, it is probably your most valuable (dollars wise) asset.

Questions my husband considers important for buyers to ask…

Is there an easement? If so, what type?

What are the included fixtures and fittings? Don’t expect that the mounted TV, or dishwasher will stay – but many times fixtures and fittings are negotiated.

Is the property currently insured? If the property already has insurance, there is no need for a cover note.

If interested there and then…Do you have an expression of interest that I can fill out right now? This is not a binding contract but give the Real Estate agent something concrete to begin negotiations. Plus an expression of interest is less time consuming than a full contract, which isn’t needed until price is accepted by both parties.

Questions to remember to ask during the listing presentation if you are selling…

How many properties have you sold personally in the last 30 days? In real estate the market is volatile, but you’d like to have someone working for you who has the ability to sell one or more properties even when nothing is moving.

How many listings are you managing currently? If the agent has less than 10 listing this could mean one of two things – they aren’t actively winning listings… or they’re selling everything quickly.

What’s your average days on market over the last 12 months? How long is each property listed for under that agent until sold? This varies in different suburbs – some higher priced areas accept that their house could be on the market for 6 months or more, but in average price ranges houses will sell in a shorted time frame.

How will you alert qualified buyers about my house being on the market? You want to know what the agent will do for you individually.

That ended up longer than I expected! Next week I’ll continue with a wife’s point of view, including my personal view of Agent verses Agency, Con men and integrity and who the agent really serves.

A Book Sneeze Review

This is a lovely book. A lovely Bible. Lucado’s Life Lessons Study Bible is well presented with an easy to understand introduction.

If you aren’t familiar with reading a bible, the ‘How to study the Bible’ section is easy to understand and it also gives an insight as to why to study the bible.

In the margin of each page, you will find the ‘Lessons’. This is what makes this Bible unique. These lessons are formatted in order of ‘Situation Observation, Inspiration, Application and Exploration.’
‘Situation gives a look into the context of the chapter’
‘Observation explains the point of the action’
‘Inspiration amplifies the point or less found in the chapter’
‘Application’ bring the message home’
‘Exploration lists other scriptures related to the same theme for further study.’

This book also features extra Bible studies throughout. These are full page and easy to read and follow.

You’ll also find ‘Christ Through the Bible’ and ‘New Life in Christ’ articles splashed throughout. These sections answer many questions the reader may have – like ‘What does life as a Christian look like?’

There is also a 2-year reading plan included for those who like direction and structure. And a very comprehensive index to lead you to the relevant verses to answer everyday questions or situations.

I have not read this cover to cover … yet… but from what I have read so far, I am really enjoying this study version of The New King James Bible. The articles and lessons are informative and enjoyable. If you don’t have a Bible or you are looking for a study Bible, give this one a thorough look.

MS Revised and Revived

I am having a wonderful week. Some weeks just shine in my writing world. Unfortunately we aren’t having the best home schooling week. So lets just focus on what’s making my writing week amazing!

The picture? Taken on holidays a couple of years ago... I love the shiny reflection - just like my shiny week.

I sent my ms to the fabulous Tania McCartney for a professional assessment. She more than delivered and gave me some ridiculously wonderful advise.

So right now, I’m creating a story board (very uncreatively) and moving the characters around as to who does what in the story. So much fun and yes, also a lot of work.

Hopefully one day I’ll find a critique partner or group I feel comfortable with, but until then I will more than likely head back to Tania for help.

I have read so much advice on finding a crit group/partner … but hit me with more… Where… how… when… do you suggest I link in with some helpful peers?

A Hair Challenge

Dreaming up characters can begin in a number of ways. I was recently waiting for a friend at a coffee shop. She was later than expected so I had a good 15 minutes to sit and relax. I used my time wisely…. People watching!

I began to observe hair styles and dream up ways of creating characters beginning with the hair style.

It was fun. There are a million hairstyles in every shopping centre to get you inspired.

My favourite was an older lady … Her over bleached strands resembled an anaemic canary.

And then there was …. Her pony tail swayed into a perfect question mark.

And there are always a couple of perfectionists … She’d recently re-bob cut and obviously cement sprayed her hair to keep it in place.

In everything we do, we are saying something to our children.

In everything we do, we speak not only to our children, but also to the children in our world.

When did our value become so attached to our appearance? The value of who we are, needs to go deeper than our skin.

I have been thinking a lot lately with the American style beauty pageants coming to Australia. I do not want to this post to be about what is right or what is wrong. What I do hope, is that you take a moment to think about at how you communicate with children.

These thoughts come purely from my own up bring and my life – which may be completely different to yours. For many years, I had eating disorders and self esteem issues. I hope my children never have those issues.

Our beauty is from within

Lisa Heidke’s Claudia’s Big Break

This is story about best friends, who have drifted apart but choose to holiday together, which leads them to multiple dilemmas. Claudia takes a married friend with one child away with her. We see the hard side of life with a child and workaholic husband. Claudia also takes with her, her single friend who has swayed between same sex relationships and heterosexual relationships. The three girls are all falling a little short of living a wonderful life.

While reading…
We learn about Claudia’s history, and what has happened in her past to make her who she is, we question marriage, and children and our true outlook on parenting. We can also take a moment as we read to question why or why not we choose our sexuality and who we are attracted to.

Thoughts while reading …
The main character in the book turns 39 while holidaying on a the Greek Island. I read this the week I turned 39. (no holiday – feet firmly planted with 4 kids, business, and hubby) But it was kind of fun to celebrate my birthday with Claudia. Aside from fun, I was thankful throughout reading this story. Thankful for this life I live. I too have a workaholic husband, but we have found our groove and our life flows in and around the business. I love and enjoy my children, parenting to me is a career and I am certain this is the position I’m meant to be in at this point in my life.

This truly is a great read, light and lovely with a little mystery. Though quite predictable, reading the workings out of the girls’ adventure is a page turner and very enjoyable.

My first fresh Friday Flash fiction for a while.
My soul seriously sings when I write something new… but no promises… I did write this one quickly.

ITCHY!!!
‘Itchy, itchy, itchy!’ Lila scratched, nearly drawing blood.
‘Itchy?’ Noelene asked.
‘Yes!’ Lila screamed.
‘I know it’s annoying, but if you’ll just wait a few minutes longer, we should have the problem solved.’
‘I. T. C. H. Y. !!!’
Noelene walked closer, quieting her voice. ‘It’s obvious you really can’t put up with it any longer. We are aware of it, and if you can just take a seat, we’ll have it all sorted in a few minutes.’
‘Can someone stop it? Please?’ she sat, slapping every inch of her body, seeking the area for a solution.
‘How are you going John?’ Noelene asked.
‘Nearly done, last one almost ready,’ he replied.
‘What is taking so long?’ Lila clawed her fingernails through her hair. John walked away, and was now out of her vision. ‘Where’s he gone?’
‘Lila, relax. He’ll be back in a minute.’
‘Oh! Itchy, itchy, itchy!’
Noelene paced the floor while Lila continued to scratch.
John returned within minutes. ‘Some lotion for your bites, and the citronella candles and mosquito coils should keep those nasty biting creatures away while we eat dinner.’

Why do you read that blog?

While I’ve been feeling time poor these past few weeks, I’ve taken some time to think about my blog. I began the blog to get some of my writing up on the internet, but soon after I began, I found a lovely community and my blog quickly became a whole lot more than that.

Questioning our motivation for why we do things is good to do once in a while. And this time, I’m asking for some feedback.

What is it that makes you the reader visit my blog?

Is it because I visit your blog?

Which topics found here, do you enjoy?

What could I include more of?

During this season of my life, I will only have time to post once or twice a week. So I want to keep it an enjoyable place for you to stop at.

Bittersweet

Bittersweet is a story of sisters. The story shows the love, the envy, the jealousy, the admiration, and many more emotions between the girls. This book will have you laughing and crying with the excitement and complications which are the lead up to the planning of a wedding.

Some thoughts while reading….

There are so many factors influencing families and sisters and their relationship. While reading this novel, I reminisced on my own relationship with my sister. There were many times throughout the book that I could actually see similarities between the fictional characters and my own life.

What is it that keeps a family together? What is it that tears them apart? What makes some people check out and vanish from their family’s lives? What happens to keep a family happy?

I think with my siblings, there is a high level of respect and we choose to be kind to each other. When I look generally at my extended family, including my in laws, added to respect and choice – there is a whole lot of prayer and God’s presence. The peace of God is evident. I love my family.

When I was in stretched state last week I blogged about being time poor. Your friendly responses encouraged me, Thank you.

There was one comment that spoke directly to my core. One comment that helped me to see clearer.

"Michelle I know exactly how you feel! I know that different seasons require a pulling back in other areas, but I always call those seasons a drawing near. It is in these times that i feel God is drawing me near to Him, and He wants to teach me something. So I usually have to give up the thing I love for a season and find 'myself' in the midst of the chaos through hearing His sweet voice.... at these times it seems that I am not moving forward and feel like my feet are stuck in cement, but when I emerge from these season I run faster than I could pre-season, because of what He has done in me. Be patient my darling, you will emerge with this with a renewed strength and able to write far more effectively than ever!! xx" Captivating Fi

I have come to a stage in my life where I have cut out everything that isn’t a priority. Everything I do in my life would have a #1 priority listing status. I could never put an assessment due before my children’s schooling. And I could never say that anything is ever more important than finding time for my husband. But cleaning… well the house could do with a little more effort.. but that one does come down the list.

I’ve cut out TV. I’ve cut right back with using social media. I limit my time reading and writing blog posts. I don’t go shopping. I get my groceries delivered. I don’t go out for coffee, or dinner or anything unless it’s planned and has a reason attached to it.

But in 10 years time I won’t be centring every move I make around my children. Right now, I choose to enjoy my children. I choose to love this season I’m in. Which means I get to do some of things I really want to do, but other things have to wait – possibly not 10 years … but at least four months – until I have finished my certificate IV.

I’ve decided to put my WIP, my novel, on hold. I was hoping to have it ready by April/May to apply for a mentorship program in June. But there will be other mentorship programs.

When life is full, sometimes you have to decide what to let go of, to fit more in. Have you ever had to let go of something to allow room for more in your life?

Writing and Groups and Critiques

I know that a good critique group is beneficial.

I know that a good writing group is beneficial.

But I don’t really have either.

I have a circle of encouraging friends whom I love dearly.

And I have some lovely online friends who I communicate with.

I know the benefits I’m missing out on.

But, I am in a season which leaves me time poor.

The writing group I joined meet a fair distance away on a day that is nearly impossible for me to negotiate to get there. Every other writing group I’ve looked into has virtually the same scenario – I just can’t see myself committing to get there.

I write. I love to write. I know I’m not the best. But I have a humble confidence that I am gifted to create worthwhile stories that could really speak to people.

I recently challenged a friend who is often running late. Her response was, ‘walk a day in my shoes.’ My thoughts were … ‘Walk a day in mine!’ but I held my tongue and remembered that we all have our ‘lot’ to deal with.

Perhaps I need to focus more on my family, my friends and everything else that is going on in my world. But then I remember that writing brings joy to my soul. When I write I feel alive. Why would these stories keep coming to my mind, if it wasn’t my calling in life to write them down?

Recently, I heard the full story of an amazing family. I have known about their miraculous story for a couple of years, but to hear the story from beginning to end has inspired yet another book.

It left me pulling myself away from the computer all day. All I wanted to do was plot out my new storyline.

Right now these things are pressing for my time and energy… a court case, kids schooling, workbooks (kids) that need to be checked, college – reading, assignments etc. And outside of that I have hubby, family, friends, church etc. I have had a cold for over a month. I feel like I am finally getting over it – but I also feel completely behind in other things that need to be done – housework, mail, tidying etc.

So what do you do when you are time poor?

What do you do when you know what you need to do, but you can’t negotiate your way through your season to fit everything in?

I know this season is short. I must be patient.

It's been a week since my last post.

What can I say...

I've been reading...

and drinking loads and loads of tea

while schooling my kids...

and trying to get over a silly cold that I've had for three and a half weeks.

I thought I was better yesterday ... but I feel miserable again today.

I will return soon. Happier and heathier.

A new story came to me last night, an idea for another novel. When I woke up this morning, instead of reading for 15 minutes like I usually do, I played out the possible plots, dreamt up characters and settings, and got excited for a moment.

And then after lunch my children went to the library and I opened up my current WIP to edit some more. That is when this bounced into my mind...

Writing is a song

To enjoy

To inspire

Editing is a job

To endure

To be done

Writing is pure joy

For the soul

For the mind

Editing is a task

Involving pain

Taking time

Writing is for me

And for others

Who may read

Editing is for the editor

To make it right

And correct

Writing is calling me

Outback Aromas ~ Angel Kisses

Recently I had the privilege to review the Outback Aromas, Angel Kisses candle.

When the Outback Aromas box arrived, I could smell the delicious contents before I even opened it. Their scents are divine!

Angel Kisses is Outback Aromas lavender plus special secret ingredients scent. Before the candle was lit this delicious candle had our home filled with its scent.

After burning for 30 mins...

and after burning for 60 minutes...

As you can see, the 60 hour candle, had not melted completely to the sides of the glass after 1 hour, so I can see that this candle would definitely last the promised 60 hours.

I love soy candles. Here is some great information straight from the Outback Aromas site…

“Soy is an environmentally friendly alternative to paraffin wax. Soy is biodegradable and a renewable natural resource. Paraffin, on the other hand, is made from petroleum. How healthy is that? Soy candles last longer and distribute more fragrance. Soy tends to burn up to 50% longer than other paraffin waxes. Because soy has a lower temperature melting point, candles will burn cooler while distributing fragrance much quicker. Soy candles produce up to 90% less soot than traditional paraffin candles.”

Candle tip: always remember to trim the wick down to 5 mm between each candle burning session. If the candle begins to smoke, blow it out and trim the wick. If it’s smoking, chances are it’ll burn too fast.

A quick peek…

Mary Lanyon is the temporary housekeeper at Downe, Western Australia, a famous Merino stud. When she arrives, she discovers the owner’s wife, Clio, has been very sick and the house is a mess, dirty and filled with secrets.

Mary’s recognises straight away that there are many puzzling questions needing answered. Though as an employed staff member, she doesn’t want to pry into the family’s problems, yet finds herself in the thick of the unravelling thread.

Some thoughts …

Some things in our lives can eat away at us like a cancer, it’s so important to deal with our issues and move forward in life. If a writer was never allowed to write or a musician never allowed to play music. Our souls begin to die if we never feed the inner self, the very thing that gives us the most pleasure which creates joy in our lives. When this is fulfilled, abundant joy in our lives overflows and we can reach out to others.

Creative skill…

Maris takes us on a journey to unravel the mysterious family tapestry of silence, blame, neglect, dysfunction and grief. Her words compel us to turn every page, hoping for some more information to piece the ‘Downe’ puzzle together. Morton draws us in with intriguing facts about the wool industry, fossils and wildflowers. Her descriptive prose intoxicates the senses with her vivid depiction of rural Western Australia. As she illustrates the timeless musical greats, I could imagine the string section tuning up, and her ability to portray the many meals served throughout the book will have you salivating.

Delightful, lovely, beautiful, fun, happy, enchanting, charming and beautiful are all words that came to mind as I read this gorgeous picture book.

I shared it with my children and asked their honest opinion…

Mr 10 ~ It’s a happy book. I liked how the boy made everyone happy.

Miss 9 ~ This could be the best book I’ve ever read. It ends with everybody happy.

Miss 7 ~ I liked it because it was nice and he gave kisses

& Miss 3... well she just loved us reading it to her.

Read and enjoyed by everyone in our house.

What moves you?

I mean, what really moves you?

I remember having a really good friend who lived 20 minutes away from me on a property. There were several falling down buildings … old and shabby and something about them enchanted me. Moved me.

Rusty roof

Weathered timber

A paling loose here

Iron curled up there

The age within

Stories held silent

Journeys unknown

Sheltered for years

A home

A stable

A dairy

A barn

An ancient shack

A haven for me

My sister recently took this photo of an old Aussie cottage, and once again, I was moved. I was moved to feel. I felt something. A tugging. A joy.

A building like this, would be my perfect writing hide-a-way. Old and shabby on the outside, and I imagine, on the inside it would be water proof, air-conditioned, and comfortable.

Alphabet Soup Magazine

I love a good magazine. The fist magazine I subscribed to was in primary school. It was aimed at kids and had loads of stories and poetry written by kids. I remember entering one of the competitions and my consolation prize was a stapler… I think it broke only a couple of years ago!

Let me introduce you to Alphabet Soup Magazine - similar but miles-apart-better.

My kid’s mag was small and black & white - possibly photocopied.

Alphabet Soup is A4, loaded with colour and professionally printed.

During my first flick through, I have to admit, I didn’t think it would grab my 10 year old boy’s attention. …. I was wrong. He loved it. He especially enjoyed reading the entries by other children.

This quarterly magazine is aimed at 6 to 12 year old children.

I found it had a healthy balance between children and adult writing and illustrations throughout Alphabet Soup.

This magazine is entertaining, educational, engaging and encouraging. You’ll find each edition filled with stories, poetry, artwork, book reviews, puzzles & competitions.

As I was working on my WIP, I came to the major climax and again splashed words on paper to get into the mind of my main character. It was only when I did this, that I could move her forward to complete my novel.
